Saint-Nazaire, is a commune in the Loire-Atlantique department in western France. The town has a major harbour, on the right bank of the Loire River estuary, near the Atlantic Ocean. The town is at the south of the second-largest swamp in France, called "la Brière". Given its location, Saint-Nazaire has a long tradition of fishing and shipbuilding.

Sinne rakennettiin yhdeksällä metrillä betonia suojattu sukellusvenetukikohta. Sukellusveneiden vuoksi satama oli jatkuvan pommituksen alaisena. Saint-Nazairen kuivatelakka mahdollisti myös taistelulaivojen Bismarck ja Tirpitz huoltamisen, mikä oli akselivalloille tavaton strateginen etu. Tämä vuoksi brittiläiset kommandot hyökkäsivät 28. maaliskuuta 1942 satamaan ja onnistuivat tuhoamaan telakan. 28. helmikuuta 1943 pommikoneet tuhosivat lähes puolet evakuoidusta kaupungista. Sukellusvenetukikohtaa lukuun ottamatta kaupunki oli tyhjä sodan loppuun. Normandian maihinnousun jälkeen saksalaisten tukikohta kieltäytyi antautumasta, eivätkä liittoutuneet ryhtyneet valloittamaan sitä. Saint-Nazairen joukot antautuivat vasta 11. toukokuuta 1945 Saksan antautumisen jälkeen. Talouselämä kärsi 1960- ja 1970-lukujen Euroopan laivanrakennuksen vähenemisestä ja pitkään kaupungissa oli runsaasti työttömyyttä.
