Amrapurkar won the Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award for his role as Rama Shetty in Govind Nihalani's Ardh Satya in 1984, and later became the first actor to win the Filmfare Best Villain Award for Sadak in 1991. He played Bal Gangadhar Tilak in the National Award winning film 22 June 1897.
