He has also been instrumental in encouraging the government to introduce legistlation prohibiting domestic violence. He is the first Bangladeshi member of parliament to have been elected as first Vice President of Geneva based Inter-Parliamentary Union's (IPU) Standing Committee on Peace and International Security and is also an active member of Commonwealth Parliamentarian Association (CPA) and Parliamentarians for Non-Proliferation and Nuclear Disarmament (PNND). He chairs Bangladesh Parliaments All Party Group on Climate Change and Environment and jointly authored a joint parliamentary inquiry of the Bangladesh and UK Parliaments, a world first, on Climate Change Equity.
