STL staat voor SurfaceTesselationLanguage of ook wel StandardTesselationLanguage (Beschrijving van het oppervlak door driehoeken). Een STL-file beschrijft alleen de oppervlakte geometrie van een vorm. De representatie van het oppervlak (materiaal, kleur en textuur) wordt niet beschreven. Het STL bestand kan zowel in een ASCII als in een binair bestand opgemaakt zijn. Binaire bestanden worden vaker toegepast omdat deze compacter zijn. Omdat een STL-file met driehoeken een vorm beschrijft is de beschrijving altijd een grove benadering van de werkelijkheid. In de figuur is een STL-file van een schijf getekend. De gehele schijf is beschreven met 16 driehoeken. Bij de driehoek a,b,c is de cirkelboog x benaderd. Hierdoor ontstaat er een afwijking van het CAD model met het STL (reële) model. Door de STL-file met een zo groot mogelijk aantal driehoeken te beschrijven wordt de afwijking kleiner. Met ander woorden de nauwkeurigheid van het STL model neemt dan toe.
