Daher sind für die üblichen Einstellungen und Änderungen keine oder nur grundlegende Linuxkenntnisse erforderlich. Aktuell ist die SME 7.4 Version verfügbar. Der SME Server 7.4 basiert auf CentOS 4.7. Aktuelle Hardware wird in der Regel problemlos erkannt, Updates werden – wenn gewünscht – vollautomatisch installiert. Für die Version 6.0.1-01 von März 2004, die auf RedHat 7.3 basiert und dadurch meist keine aktuelle Hardware (wie S-ATA und Gigabit Netzwerkkarten) erkennt und für die noch unzählige Erweiterungen erhältlich sind, wird es keine Updates (auch keine Sicherheitsupdates) mehr geben, nachdem das Fedora Legacy Project die Unterstützung für RedHat 7.3 eingestellt hat.

SME Server v7.1 est une distribution Linux basée sur CentOS 4.4, clone GPL de RedHat Enterprise Linux version 4 (RHEL 4). Cette distribution permet également de créer ses propres services internet (messagerie, http, ftp, vpn…) et ses services de réseau local (serveur de fichiers, serveur d'impression, filtre antivirus sur la messagerie…) Une interface web très intuitive offre une prise en main rapide de toutes les fonctions d'administration du serveur. La distribution SME server s'appelait auparavant e-smith (de la société e-smith, inc.). Elle n'a fait que changer de nom pour prendre celui de SME Server lors de son rachat par le groupe Mitel Networks en 2001. Fin novembre 2003, Mitel Networks a décidé d'arrêter le développement de la distribution et le projet a été repris par un groupe de développeurs bénévoles sur le site fédérateur http://contribs. org. Le nom SME Server a été conservé pour désigner la distribution.
