The Mexican company was founded in mid-1996, a joint venture between British Sky Broadcasting (BSkyB), News Corporation, Liberty Media and Grupo Televisa. It was launched on December 15, 1996. At the same time it was being set up in Brazil, where it involved BSkyB, News Corporation, Liberty Media and Organizações Globo. By May 2000, it had launched in Argentina and Colombia. On July 10, 2002, with 52 thousand subscribers Sky Argentina ceased all operations. Currently, most Sky operations in Latin America were rebranded to DirecTV, with the exception of the Mexican and Brazilian operations, which absorbed the DirecTV operations in those countries and kept the Sky name. Sky Brazil is 74% owned by The DirecTV Group and 26% by Organizações Globo. Sky Mexico is 58.7% owned by Grupo Televisa and 41.3% by The DirecTV Group. In May 2009, Sky Brazil launched its first 10 HDTV channels in 1080i resolution (with the exception of ESPNHD, which is broadcast in 720p, for being a Disney network).
