Sporting Clube de Braga, commonly known as Sporting Braga or just Braga, is a Portuguese sports club, from the city of Braga, that was founded in 1921. Its football team plays at the AXA Stadium, also known as The Quarry, which was built for UEFA Euro 2004. Die Vereinsfarben sind Rot und Weiß. Das Heimstadion ist das Estádio Municipal de Braga mit Platz für 30.000 Zuschauer und wurde für die Fußball-Europameisterschaft 2004 neu gebaut. Das Stadion soll eines der schönsten und interessantesten Bauwerke der EURO 2004 gewesen sein, da das Stadion in einen Granitfelsen gebaut wurde. Es wurde nach dem Architekten Eduardo Souto Moura benannt und gewann 2004 einen Architekturpreis. Der Verein stieg zum ersten Mal im Jahre 1947 in die erste Liga Portugals auf, stieg zwischendurch aber auch öfters wieder ab. Größter Erfolg ist bisher der Gewinn des Portugiesischen Pokals im Jahr 1966 gegen den Verein Vitória Setúbal mit 1:0. Sporting Braga nahm daraufhin auch zum ersten Mal am Europapokal der Pokalsieger teil und erreichte die zweite Runde. Auch in den Jahren 1982/83 schaffte der Club den Einzug in diesen Pokalwettbewerb, schied aber gleich in der ersten Runde aus. Dem Verein gelang es Ende der 1980er Jahre, sich in der oberen Hälfte der SuperLiga zu etablieren und nahm erfolgreich am UEFA-Pokal 1997/98 teil, wo man erst in der dritten Runde gegen den FC Schalke 04 ausschied. Weitere Teilnahmen am UEFA-Cup hatte Sporting Braga in den Jahren 1978/79, 1983/84, 1998/99, 2004/05 und 2006/07. Im UEFA-Pokal 2007/08 traf der SC Braga auf den FC Bayern München und in der K.O. -Runde auf den SV Werder Bremen. Dort war allerdings auch Endstation. Werder Bremen gewann das Hinspiel deutlich mit 3:0, das Rückspiel in Braga mit 1:0. Der Verein hat mehrere Sportabteilungen und feierte auch schon internationale Erfolge in der Leichtathletik der Frauen.
