- Ruth Ruth is a pop punk band formed in New York City in 1993, initially playing gigs for free at New York City's Continental nightclub. Their occasional shows became a residency and by the following year, Chris Kennedy (Bass/ Lead Vocals/ Songwriter), Mike Lustig (Guitar), and drummer Dave Snyder had signed a record deal with American Recordings. Their debut album "Laughing Gallery," co-produced by Ted Nicely (Fugazi, Girls Against Boys) and Kennedy, was released in October 1995. The song "Uninvited" from the album gained Ruth Ruth some success, including alternative radio play and a few months of MTV rotation. The band toured nationally with Everclear and No Doubt, while also headlining a few shows in the UK. Unhappy with the American Recordings handling of the album, the band released a 45 single on Deep Elm Records as well as the Epitaph EP "The Little Death" in 1996, co-produced by Kennedy and Brett Guerwitz. Before "The Little Death" was released, Synder left the group, replaced by drummer Christian Nakata. Headline tours and support tours with Spacehog, Everclear and Sam I Am followed. In 1997, the band recorded new material, which was to be released on their 2nd album for American. RCA A&R rep Brian Malouf, after seeing Ruth Ruth play a show at the Continental Club, expressed interest in signing the group. RCA paid American for the unreleased masters and Ruth Ruth resurfaced in 1998 on RCA with "Are You My Friend?" with the addition of Michael Kotch (Eve's Plum) on rhythm guitar. The title of the RCA Records album Are You My Friend? was a direct, if unflattering quote from their A & R contact at American, and the cut from this album titled "Kaboom" (with lyrics such as "now you're dead and I'm happy") was said to have been a celebration of their escape from their relationship with American Recordings. The song "Condition" was featured in the film "Urban Legend. " In 2000, the band recorded new material for RCA, which was released under the name Ultra-V. The album was called "Bring on the Fuego" and represented a dramatic departure stylistically from Ruth Ruth. Bassist Maggie Kim joined the group for a handful of shows. The song "Shut Your Mouth" was featured in the film "Joyride. " "Can I Crash Here Tonight" was featured in the TV show "Roswell. " In 2004, Kotch left the lineup and Kennedy, Lustig and Nakata released the self produced "Right About Now" as Ruth Ruth. The album was well received critically and the band returned to play a handful of shows in New York City as well as the 9:30 Club in Washington D.C. with Everclear. Shortly thereafter, the group disbanded. In 2009, Live in Toronto was released, a live recording culled from a 1996 CBC broadcast. In July 2011, the Kent State University Press published 1950s Radio in Color - The Lost Photographs of Deejay Tommy Edwards, written by Chris Kennedy. Between 1955 and 1960, popular Cleveland deejay Tommy Edwards photographed the parade of performers who passed through the WERE-AM radio studio for on-air interviews, shooting more than 1,700 Ektachrome slides. Following his death in 1981, most of the collection vanished and was presumed lost. The few images that remained were often reprinted and rarely credited to Edwards, labeled photographer unknown. Until now. Discovered by musician Chris Kennedy in 2006, Tommy Edwards's candid photographs capture the birth of rock 'n' roll at its flashpoint: Elvis Presley while he was still dangerous; a raw and incomplete Chuck Berry before his star ascended; and some beady-eyed, high-voiced kid named Roy Orbison. It wasn't just the architects of rock music whom Edwards had in his viewfinder. There were also pop and country music s biggest stars, mysterious, unknown hopefuls, and vulnerable, deglamourized Hollywood celebrities. Edwards's passion for photography immortalized hundreds of pioneers of rock 'n' roll and pop culture in the radio studio, a setting that was often unseen. His photos offer a rare look behind a closed door. In 2009, Kennedy located the only surviving copy of the T.E. Newsletter collection, Tommy Edwards's self-published weekly two-page recap of Cleveland radio and record news for music business insiders, spanning from 1953 through 1960. The wealth of information and dates contained in the newsletters are the photo collection's indispensable companion piece, and Edwards's anecdotal quips are interspersed throughout the text of the book. 1950s Radio in Color gives Tommy Edwards his due recognition as the deejay responsible for perhaps the most important photographic and written documentation of twentieth-century music ever produced. Featuring over 200 color photographs, this book will transport readers back in time, allowing them to step into Edwards's shoes for a moment and to feel the wonder and excitement he must have felt every day while witnessing a cultural revolution.
