Ruperto Chapí y Lorente was a Spanish composer, and co-founder of the Sociedad General de Autores. Chapí was the son of a Valencian barber. He trained in his home town and Madrid. He wrote a large number of symphonic, band, choral and chamber works, as well as zarzuelas and operas, becoming, alongside Tomás Bretón, a fellow pupil of Emilio Arrieta at the Madrid Conservatoire. He was one of the most popular and important composers of his time.

He was one of the most popular and important composers of his time. He wrote zarzuelas in all shapes and sizes, including the 3-act zarzuela grande and the one-act género chico forms. His most celebrated work is La revoltosa, written in the latter style. Many of the preludes to his zarzuelas (including those to El tambor de granaderos and La patria chica) have remained staple items in Spanish orchestral concerts.

Im Alter von 16 Jahren ging er zum Studium an das Konservatorium nach Madrid, wo er bei Miguel Galiana Harmonielehre und bei Emilio Arrieta Komposition studierte. Danach wurde er zunächst Dirigent eines Blasorchesters eines Artillerie Regiments. Dann studierte er in Paris am Konservatorium. Einige Jahre später ging er nach Rom, um seine musikalische Ausbildung zu vervollständigen. 1878 kehrte er nach Spanien zurück. Obwohl seine erste Zarzuela schon 1867 entstand, feierte er nach seiner Rückkehr aus Rom große Erfolge mit dieser besonderen Form der Bühnenmusik in Spanien. In der Folge erschienen jährlich ein bis zwei Zarzuelas von ihm, die ihm großen Ruhm einbrachten. In seinem Œuvre befinden sich daneben auch Opern, Orchesterwerke, Blasorchesterwerke und Kammermusik.
