- The Royal Mile is the popular name for the succession of streets which form the main thoroughfare of Edinburgh's Old Town. As the name suggests, the Royal Mile is approximately one Scottish mile long, and runs between two foci of history in Scotland, from Edinburgh Castle at the top of the Castle Rock down to Holyrood Abbey. It is said to be referred to by locals as "High Street", but properly, this is the name of only one stretch. The streets which make up the Royal Mile are (west to east) Castle Esplanade, Castlehill, Lawnmarket, High Street, Canongate and Abbey Strand. The Royal Mile is Edinburgh Old Town's busiest tourist street, rivalled only by Princes Street in the New Town.

De mysterieuze Mary King's Close is hiervan wellicht de bekendste. De Royal Mile kent een groot aantal cafés, restaurants en op toeristen gerichte winkeltjes, met veel aandacht voor de tradionele Schotse kilts en tartans. Het Heart of Midlothian is een hartvormig mozaïek in het plaveisel rond de Sint Giles kathedraal aan de Royal Mile. Samen met herkenningspunten van messing, markeert het de positie van de 15 eeuwse tolpoort van de stad (gesloopt in 1817). Deze poort was het administratieve centrum van Edinburgh. Het embleem van de Schotse voetbalclub Heart of Midlothian FC is gebaseerd op het mozaïek.

Wynika to ze znacznego zaludnienia w średniowieczu, kiedy Edynburg był miastem zamkniętym w murach i jedynym sposobem na stworzenie nowych mieszkań była dobudowa kolejnych pięter do istniejących domów. Innym typowym elementem ulicy są closes, wąskie korytarze pomiędzy budynkami, prowadzące na niewielkie dziedzińce, do ogrodów na tyłach bądź na sąsiednie ulice. Royal Mile przez większość roku oblegana jest przez turystów, a w czasie festiwalu teatralnego spotkać tu można grupy teatralne, mimów i cyrkowców. Wypełniona jest przeróżnymi pamiątkarskimi sklepikami z whisky, kiltami i innymi wyrobami rzemieślniczymi. Znajdują się tu także godne uwagi muzea i kościoły oraz urzędy, w tym Sąd Najwyższy Szkocji.
