Ein Eintrag, der eine gewisse Zeit nicht aktualisiert wurde, durchläuft die beiden letzteren Zustände, bevor der Eintrag schlussendlich aus der Routingtabelle gelöscht wird. Das Protokoll gehört zur Transportschicht.
