A rotary is a type of circular roadway intersection. Rotaries are most common in the Northeastern United States, especially Massachusetts, and most were built in the mid-twentieth century, though construction of rotaries largely ceased thereafter. Rotaries are often referred to in common usage as a "traffic circle", though the term "traffic circle" can apply to other circular intersection types which are not rotaries. Rotaries are much larger and operate at higher speeds than modern roundabouts.
