Beide Bands bedienen dasselbe Genre und hatten zum Teil auch dieselben Produzenten (Vanda/Young), AC/DC konnte jedoch einen höheren Bekanntheitsgrad erreichen. In den späten Achtzigern löste sich die Band auf. Erst 1993 schaffte sie ein Comeback im Original Line-up, nachdem ihnen Guns N’ Roses in Australien die Rolle der Vorgruppe auf ihrer dortigen Tour gaben. Aus dieser Zeit wurde im Jahre 1994 eine im Boggo Road Jail gefilmte Live-DVD, veröffentlicht, die nur in Australien erhältlich ist. Die Band bezeichnet sich selbst als unpolitisch. Als sie auf einer Deutschlandtour als Vorgruppe der Böhsen Onkelz spielte, wurden sie von zahlreichen Fans boykottiert. Auf die Frage, ob Rose Tattoo davon wüssten, dass die Böhsen Onkelz in Deutschland einen fragwürdigen Ruf genießen, antwortete Peter Wells, dies interessiere schlichtweg niemanden aus der Band. Im Jahr 2005 spielten Rose Tattoo beim "Vaya Con Tioz"-Abschlussfestival der Böhsen Onkelz auf dem Lausitzring vor 120.000 Zuschauern, was bis dato ihr größter Auftritt war. In seiner Freizeit kümmert sich Anderson um benachteiligte Kinder in Australien. In einem Interview im australischen Fernsehen bat Anderson die Zuschauer zudem, sich gegen Kinderprostitution in den benachbarten asiatischen Ländern einzusetzen. Diesem Thema widmete er auf dem letzten Album Pain mit dem Titel House Of Pain ein eigenes Lied. Er betätigte sich mit der Rolle des Ironbar in Mad Max 3 neben Tina Turner auch als Schauspieler. 2002 erkrankte Peter Wells an Prostatakrebs und wurde bei den letzten beiden Touren von anderen Gitarristen vertreten, u.a. von Dai Prichard. Im Herbst 2005 veröffentlichte Wells sein letztes Soloalbum Mothers Worry. Im September desselben Jahres wurde in Sydney ein großes Benefizkonzert zu Gunsten von Peter Wells organisiert, bei dem sich das Who is Who der australischen Rockszene beteiligte. Am 27. März 2006 verstarb er an seiner Krankheit. Bei Ex-Rose-Tattoo-Bassist Ian Rilen, Komponist des Bandklassikers Bad Boy For Love, immer mal wieder in der Band über die letzten 10 Jahre, wurde im Juni 2006 ebenfalls Krebs diagnostiziert, er verstarb am 30. Oktober 2006 an den Folgen der Krankheit. Seit 2004 spielt Gitarrist Mick Cocks zusätzlich in der australischen Hard-Rock-Band Doomfoxx, mit der Rose Tattoo bereits tourte. Im August 2006 spielten Rose Tattoo zusammen mit dem ehemaligen Böhse-Onkelz-Gitarristen Matthias Röhr auf dem Wacken Open Air und dem "Rock Over Hamburg"-Festival. Im Juni und Juli 2007 spielten Rose Tattoo laut Nachricht auf der offiziellen Homepage der Band erneut als Vorgruppe von Guns N’ Roses in Australien. Am 20. Mai gab die Band auf ihrer offiziellen Homepage bekannt, dass ihr langjähriger Bassist Steve King die Band verlassen hat. Als Grund wurde angegeben, dass sich King musikalisch in eine andere Richtung bewege als die Band. Bereits am 3. Juni wurde verlautbart, dass mit Geordie Leach ein alter Bekannter am Bass zurück zur Band stoßen würde. Leach ist neben Anderson und Cocks ein Mitglied von Rose Tattoo, das auf allen der ersten vier Studio-LPs der Band zu hören ist. Im April 2009 verkündete das Management der Band, dass Gitarrist Mick Cocks an Leberkrebs erkrankt ist.
