- Roots Rock is a term recently used to describe "a style of rock music that draws material from various American musical traditions including country, blues, and folk. " The term is sometimes used in a broader sense to encompass other Americana, including early rock and roll, country rock, and other genres of rock with traditional roots. Decades prior to its current popular use the term has had an association with reggae music popularized by Bob Marley's song "Roots Rock Reggae" in 1976. With the term's new use "roots rock" refers to "a return to rock 'n' roll's roots: the merging of blues and country, a revival of folk, an adaptation and celebration of American rock local traditions, such as swamp-rock, rockabilly, Southern rock,and heartland rock. " Music critics have recently referred to rock bands from late 1960s such as Creedence Clearwater Revival through the mid-1990s-era such as the band Wilco as "roots rock" and more recently, emerging artists such as Neko Case.

Il Roots Rock, nel quale confluiscono elementi stilistici ripresi dal rock and roll, dal blues e dal country, si diffuse inizialmente nelle radio dei college americani. Molti dei gruppi che esplorarono il genere, quali The Beat Farmers, Del Lords, The Long Ryders inizialmente si ispirarono alla musica dei Creedence Clearwater Revival, ai quali però si affiancarono artisti e gruppi che si discostarono da qualsiasi fonte di ispirazione per trarne un genere nuovo. Tra questi John Mellencamp, John Doe, T-Bone Burnett, John Fogerty e i Los Lobos (conosciuti grazie a La Bamba). Il genere riscosse un discreto successo nei primi anni '80. Sebbene molti dei suoi esponenti continuarono a produrre musica anche nei primi anni '90, questi non videro grandi nomi emergere nel panorama musicale contemporaneo.

Voordat de term gebruikt werd voor dit genre, had het met name een associatie met reggae, zoals in de Bob Marley song "Roots Rock Reggae" uit 1976. In het huidige gebruik van de term betekent rootsrock een terugkeer naar de oorsprong van de rock-'n-roll, de versmelting van de blues en country en de folkrevival, waarbij weer wordt teruggegrepen op de Amerikaanse rock traditie. Bij het genre wordt gedacht aan rockbands uit de late jaren 60, zoals Creedence Clearwater Revival, jaren 90 bands als Wilco en nieuwere artiesten als Neko Case.
