Diecéze zabírá plochu o rozloze 4 197 km² s přibližně 455 000 obyvateli katolického vyznání (údaje se však značně liší). Území arcibiskupství zahrnuje vedle Goi a Damanu i Diu a území Dadra a Nagar Haveli (vše části bývalé Portugalské Indie). Arcibiskupem je současně Filipe Neri Ferrão. Diecéze Goa byla zřízena 31. ledna 1533, 4. února 1558 byla změněna na arcidiecézi. 1. září 1886 byl z části arcidiecéze zřízeno nové biskupství Damão. Arcibiskupovi v Goi byl papežem Lvem XIII. propůjčen titul „patriarcha východní Indie“, čímž měla být kompenzována ztráta jeho práv v Britské Indii a vyřešeno tak zvané „Goiské šizma“. Dne 1. května 1928 byly obě diecéze sjednoceny jako Arcidiecéze Goa e Damão. Některé části arcidiecéze byly pak 15. září 1953 odstoupeny nově zřízené diecézi Belgaum.

Tot 2006, toen het als kerkprovincie werd ingericht, viel het rechtstreeks onder de Heilige Stoel. Het patriarchaat bestaat slechts titulair, in de zin dat de aartsbisschop tegelijkertijd de eretitel van patriarch draagt. De kathedraalkerk is de de kerk van Sint-Cajetan in Oud-Goa. Het bisdom Goa werd in 1533 opgericht als bisdom en 1558 verheven tot aartsbisdom. In 1886 werden delen van het aartsbisdom afgesplitst om het bisdom Damão te vormen . De aartsbisschop van Goa kreeg van paus Leo XIII de titel van patriarch. In 1928 werden de beide bisdommen verenigd tot het bisdom Goa en Daman. In 2006 werd het aartsbisdom opnieuw verheven tot metropolitaanbisdom. Enig suffragaan is de bisschop van Sindhudurg.
