Roland hat unter anderem mit den Geräten TR-808 (1981), TB-303 (1982) und TR-909 (1983) einen massiven Einfluss auf die gesamte Techno-/Elektro-Szene gehabt. Speziell die TB-303 war zur Zeit ihres Erscheinens ein absoluter Flop. Der spartanische Basssynthesizer klang extrem synthetisch und konnte seinen eigentlichen Zweck, die Simulation eines echten Bass, nicht erfüllen. Erst als Ende der 80er/Anfang der 90er die Techno-Szene aufkeimte, avancierte die TB-303 zum Kult-Gerät. Die Sounds der 303 und der 909 waren omnipräsent, in der Acid-Musik wurden sogar fast ausschließlich diese Geräte verwendet. Während der 303-Hype Ende der 90er etwas abflachte, sind die Sounds der TR-808 und TR-909 auch heute bei elektronischer Musik präsent. In den frühen 80er Jahren schuf Roland mit dem Jazz-Chorus JC120 einen legendären Gitarrenverstärker für erstklassige unverzerrte Sounds, die mit einem hochwertigen eingebauten Chorus-Effekt versehen werden konnten. Roland ist heutzutage nach wie vor ein sehr bedeutender Hersteller von Musik-Equipment, speziell im elektronischen Sektor. 1996 begründete Roland durch die MC-303 die Geräteklasse der Grooveboxen. Der "Fantom" teilt sich mit dem Yamaha Motif und dem KORG Triton den Markt der Spitzen-Keyboard-Workstations. Die Synthesizer aus den Jupiter- und Juno-Reihen, der SH-101 und andere Geräte zählen zu den Klassikern in ihren Bereichen. Mit den JV-Synthesizern setzte Roland in den 90er-Jahren zeitweise die Standards im Bereich der Sample-ROM-Synthesizer. Der 2003 erschienene V-Synth vereint hochwertige Samples, Granularsynthese sowie flexible Filter und Modulatoren in einem Gerät.
