Rodney Crowell (born August 7, 1950) is a Grammy Award-winning musician, known primarily for his work as a singer and songwriter in country music. He is considered to be part of both the alternative country and the mainstream country music camps. He is a contemporary of Steve Earle and, like Earle, was also influenced by the songwriting greats Guy Clark and Townes Van Zandt. Crowell played guitar and sang for three years in Emmylou Harris' "Hot Band".

Dessa texter är ofta oerhört självkritiska, exempelvis skriver han öppet om när han själv föll in i faderns fotspår och slog kvinnor. Crowell startade ett band i tonåren som kallades The Arbitrators. Efter att ha spelat på skoldanser och liknande bestämde han sig för att söka lyckan som låtskrivare i Nashville. Efter en trög start spelade till slut Emmylou Harris in två av hans låtar, "Til I Can Gain Control Again" och "Bluebird Wine". 1975 gick Crowell med i hennes band The Hot Band som gitarrist, där han spelade och uppträdde fram till 1977. Han släppte sitt första soloalbum 1978 och har sedan dess släppt ett tiotal album. Hans riktiga genombrott för en bredare publik kom först 2001 med albumet The Houston Kid, följt av Fate's Right Hand 2003 som av många country-kritiker anses vara ett av de bästa country-albumen på senare tid. 2005 spelade han på Hultsfredsfestivalen. Crowell var gift med Johnny Cashs dotter Rosanne Cash i tolv år, och hade fram till Johnnys död en god kontakt med honom. När han 2001 bad Cash spela in en låt med honom, "I Walk the Line Revisited", som bygger på Cashs megahit "I Walk the Line", fick han dock lära sig att gammal är äldst. Cash spontana reaktion skall ha varit "Att du har mage att ändra min melodi, grabben". Crowell samlade mod och svarade "Ja, men om någon kan så är det du". Cash gick med på förslaget och de spelade tillsammans in låten som finns på albumet The Houston Kid och handlar om första gången Crowell som ung hörde "I Walk the Line".
