Of Reis' many musical endeavors, Rocket from the Crypt were the most successful and most internationally recognized. The band gained critical praise and the attention of major record labels after the release of their 1992 album ', leading to a recording contract with Interscope Records. They experienced a surge of popularity with the release of the albums Scream, Dracula, Scream! (1995) and RFTC (1998), accompanied by numerous vinyl singles and EPs released on independent labels. However, album sales were not as high as expected and Interscope soon turned their attention to higher-grossing acts. The band left the label, and shortly thereafter drummer Atom Willard departed the group. After a period of inactivity in 1999 and 2000, during which Reis formed Hot Snakes and Sultans and launched his Swami Records label, the band signed to Vagrant Records and recruited new drummer Ruby Mars. They experienced a revitalization of creative energy and released two more albums, but were not as prolific as in the past. Over the next few years the band members drifted into other projects and Rocket from the Crypt became less the focus. They decided to disband in 2005, playing a sold-out farewell show on Halloween in their hometown of San Diego.

Leur deuxième album ' sort en 1992 et RFTC réalise plusieurs titres qui seront diffusés en radio comme "Hippy Dippy Do. " L'album Circa:Now! est ressorti en 2004 avec quatre titres additionnels. Fin 1992, RFTC signe avec Interscope, un label plus important et la section cuivre reçoit l'apport de JC 2000 (Jason Crane). Le groupe est néanmoins peu actif car Speedo s'implique dans un autre groupe : Drive Like Jehu. En 1995, RFTC produit plusieurs 7", dont le EP The State of Art is on Fire et l'album Hot Charity. Le groupe fait une tournée gratuite aux États-Unis pour promouvoir l'album. Ils ont aussi sorti un 7" appelé Tattoo qui a été offert à tout fan du groupe ayant un tatouage RFTC sur le corps (le groupe autorise aussi toute personne ayant un tatouage RFTC a entrer à ses concerts gratuitement). Le groupe sort ensuite l'album Live from Camp X-Ray en 2002. Le groupe effectue alors moins de concerts et moins d'enregistrements. Début septembre 2005, Reis (Speedo) annonce via les sites du label Swami Records et du groupe, ainsi que par courrier électronique que le groupe se sépare après 16 ans de carrière. RFTC a fait ses adieux à la scène lors d'un concert complet lors d'Halloween 2005 au Westin Horton Plaza Hotel de San Diego. Le groupe a été rejoint sur scène par Jon Wurster qui a joué du tambourin. Le groupe a effectué deux rappels en changeant de costume entre chaque rappel. Ils ont fini avec les costumes de mariachis qu'ils utilisaient sur scène au milieu des années 1990.
