- Rock Werchter is a Belgian annual music festival held in the village of Werchter, near Leuven, since 1974. It is one of the five biggest annual rock music festivals in Europe. The 2003, 2005, 2006 and 2007 festivals received the Arthur award for best festival in the world at the International Live Music Conference (ILMC). It can host 80,000 guests, of which 69,000 combine all four days, to add up to a total maximum of 113,000 different attendees. The festival started in 1974 as a one-day event with performances from Banzai and Kandahar, but over the years it has evolved to become Belgium's largest music festival. Originally it was a double-festival, called "Torhout-Werchter", with two festival areas at different sites in Belgium: one in Werchter and one in Torhout. In 1999, the festival dropped the Torhout site and since then has taken place only in Werchter. Since 2003 Werchter has been a 4-day festival, as it was sold by owner Herman Schueremans to American organizers Live Nation. Schueremans however remains the main organiser of the event. The festival is organised every first weekend of the summer vacation in Belgium (last weekend of June or the first of July). Roskilde festival and the Arras Main Square Festival are almost always organised in the same weekend, so they can 'share' bands. Sometimes, the Glastonbury Festival is organised at the same weekend, but most years it's organised a weekend earlier. In recent years, there has been controversy about rising ticket prices. Because of this, Schueremans was heckled during an appearance on HUMO's Pop Poll, a Belgian alternative award show. At 169€ for four days (17€ extra to include camping) in 2008 it is considered a relatively inexpensive music festival. The camping sites officially open at 8am on the first day of the festival, but because of guests arriving early and camping on the street, the organizers have traditionally been forced to open the camping sites early - sometimes more than 24 hours. The campsites are located along the three main entrance roads into Werchter, most of them within 1 kilometer of the festival site but some located as far as 3 kilometers away. In 2011, for the first time, XL camping tickets are available, allowing festival goers to arrive and camp from 4pm on the Wednesday before the festival. Until the 1990s the festival attracted mostly Flemish people, but in recent years it has become more and more international with an especially large influx of Dutch, French, Walloon, British and a notable Australian and South African contingent. Belgian alternatives remain in the Pukkelpop and Dour festivals.

Het vindt elke zomer plaats in het dorpje Werchter, meer bepaald in het laatste weekend van juni of het eerste van juli. Het is het grootste van België en een van de grootste en bekendste van de wereld. Vroeger heette Rock Werchter Torhout-Werchter, aangezien het een dubbelfestival was dat jaarlijks plaatsvond waarbij een aantal edities zowel in Werchter als Torhout plaatsvonden, en een aantal edities in een van de twee gemeenten. De benaming "TW" nog terug te vinden in de naam TW Classic. Het festival werd voor het eerst gehouden in 1974, sinds 1999 wordt het festival enkel nog in Werchter georganiseerd. De jubileumeditie van Rock Werchter in 2003 telde voor het eerst vier dagen. De line-up werd gesierd met namen als Metallica, Radiohead, Björk, Moby, Massive Attack, Coldplay en R.E.M.. In 2008 werden over de vier dagen 319.000 bezoekers geteld. 30% van die aanwezigen is buitenlander, met Nederlanders en Britten (10.000) als de twee belangrijkste landen van oorsprong. Het festivalterrein bestaat uit een grote weide met een hoofdpodium en een overdekte tent (de Pyramid Marquee). De campings worden door verenigingen uit de omgeving geëxploiteerd, in tegenstelling tot festivals als Pinkpop en Lowlands. Het festivalterrein is in handen van de organisatie en doorheen het jaar worden er ook verschillende andere optredens georganiseerd. Zo wordt er al een aantal jaar het festival TW Classic georganiseerd. Dit festival grijpt terug naar de roots van het festival: 1 zomerse dag, 1 podium en verschillende (oudere) groepen. In 2008 ging ook voor de eerste keer Werchter Boutique door, dat meer op families gericht is. Er waren 30.000 aanwezigen. De organisator van het festival is Herman Schueremans, die voor Rock Werchter al vier keer de "Arthur Award for best festival" heeft ontvangen van International Live Music Conference. Het festival is in handen van het Amerikaanse bedrijf Live Nation en wordt traditioneel ook gesponsord door het blad Humo.

Le festival, tout d'abord Rock & Blues, a été créé en 1975 avec à l'affiche : Big Bill, Kandahar, Banzai, et The Bintangs. Jusqu'en 1995, il s'agissait d'un festival double dénommé "Torhout-Werchter", se jouant également à Torhout au cours du week-end avec la même programmation. En 1996, il passe à 2 jours, 3 jours en 2000 et 4 jours depuis 2003. Il existe par ailleurs une édition "TW Classics" se déroulant le week-end avant ou après l'édition principale, et rassemblant sur une soirée divers groupes rocks confirmés. Les installations sont par ailleurs régulièrement réutilisées à l'occasion de concerts exceptionnels au cours de l'été. Les éditions de 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007 et 2008 ont gagné le Arthur Award, trophée qui récompense le meilleur festival mondial. Depuis l'édition de 2003, Rock Werchter est devenu un festival de quatre jours et il accueille, d'après le site officiel, environ 350 000 festivaliers chaque année. Le site accueille deux scènes : la Main stage, pour les têtes d'affiche, et la Pyramid Marquee (couverte) pour les groupes plus "modestes". Madonna y a joué son Sticky and Sweet tour II le 11 juillet 2009.
