- The River Moy (Abhainn na Muaidhe in Irish) rises in the Ox Mountains in County Sligo in the northwest of Ireland. For the greater part of its length, the Moy flows southwestward, entering County Mayo and passing not far from Swinford before turning north near the village of Kilmore and heading for the historic town of Ballina, where it empties into Killala Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. The Moy valley, with its ancient churches and abbeys, is a prominent tourist destination. The river was once among the best salmon fisheries in Europe; however, in recent times, drift net fishing off the coast caused a huge decline in salmon numbers. According to central fisheries board statistics, 101,231 returning salmon were taken by drift nets off the west coast of Ireland in 2005. In the same year, 29% (6,675) of all rod caught salmon in Ireland were taken in the Ballina district, as a result of a weir, which keeps salmon trapped in the ridge pool, near the mouth of the river, during the summer. Drift netting for salmon was banned in November 2006. - Der Moy oder River Moy ist ein 99 km langer Fluss im Westen Irlands. Der River Moy entspringt in den Ox Mountains im irischen County Sligo und fließt zunächst in südwestlicher Richtung. Wenige Kilometer nordöstlich von Swinford, das an einem seiner Zuflüsse liegt, überschreitet er die Grenze zum County Mayo, in dem der River Moy zum überwiegenden Teil fließt. Auf Höhe des Lough Cullin, den er mit dem Lough Conn und beide mit dem Atlantik verbindet, wendet der Moy sich nordwärts und fließt durch Foxford und Ballina über die Killala Bay in den Atlantik. Der Moy gehörte zu den besten Lachs-Fischgründen in Europa; Treibnetzfischerei vor der Küste verursachte jedoch einen starken Rückgang bei der Zahl zurückkehrender Fische (im Jahr 2005 wurden über 100.000 Lachse vor der irischen Westküste mit Treibnetzen abgefangen). Seit Januar 2007 ist der Treibnetzfang von Lachsen nunmehr verboten.

On y trouve également de nombreux élevages de poissons. La vallée de la Moy est très fréquentée par les touristes qui viennent voir les nombreuses églises et abbayes.

Lungo circa 99 km, nasce nello Sligo, tra le Ox Mountains e percorrendo il territorio verso sud-ovest, entrando quindi nel Mayo passando vicinissimo a Swinford, per Foxford e infine Ballina, prima di gettarsi nell'Oceano Atlantico nella Baia di Killala. Il fiume è famoso per essere ricco di pesci: oggetto di grande attenzione quindi per gli amanti della pesca, è uno dei punti più ricchi in tutta Europa di salmoni. Nel cuore di Ballina, l'ultima città attraversata dal Moy vicinissima alla foce, è situato il celere Ridge Pool (nella foto), il luogo ideale per pescare il pregiato pesce. Da tempo è stata riconosciuta una zona molto ampia chiamata Moy Valley ("Valle del Moy") che comprende anche centri e località non proprio a ridosso del fiume. Questa zona comprende la foce del fiume, la Baia di Killala, la Baia di Bunatrahir e le zone vicine ai Lough Cullin e Conn. La Moy Valley comprende molti circoli golfistici e molte zone di interesse artistico e culturale come la Moyne Abbey, la Rosserk Abbey, St. Patrick's Well e i Céide Fields. I centri inclusi nell'area sono Ballina, Ballycastle, Bonniconlon Crossmolina Easkey, Enniscrone, Foxford, Killala Pontoon
