- Ripping is the process of copying audio or video content to a hard disk, typically from removable media or media streams. The word is used to refer to all forms of media. Despite the name, the media is not damaged during the extraction process, nor is the data deleted from the source. Digital audio extraction is a more formal phrase applied to the ripping of audio CDs. Ripping is distinct from simple file copying, in which the source audio/video is not formatted for ease of use in a computer filesystem. For example, the hierarchy of files making up the audio/video data on a DVD-Video disc can be encoded into a single avi file. In addition, the copied data are often compressed with appropriate codecs. Ripping is often used to shift formats, and to edit, duplicate or back up media content. Media files released on the Internet may describe the source of the rip in their names, e.g. DVD-Rip.
- Rippen bezeichnet im Computerjargon das Kopieren von Musik oder Filmen von einer Datenquelle auf die Festplatte eines Computers. Das Verb leitet sich vom englischen „to rip“ ab, das in diesem Zusammenhang soviel wie (herunter)„reißen“ bedeutet. Datenquellen können analoge Aufnahmen, CDs oder DVDs sein oder Datenströme aus dem Internet, beispielsweise von Internetradios. Beim Rippen werden häufig Datenformate konvertiert und der Kopierschutz entfernt. Nach dem Rippen lassen sich die Daten meist beliebig vervielfältigen. Das zugehörige Programm nennt sich Ripper. Populäre CD-Ripper sind: CDex, EAC (Exact Audio Copy), Fairstars und Audiograbber für Windows sowie Grip und Krabber, die beide auf cdparanoia aufsetzen, für Linux. Auch viele Audioplayer wie Winamp, iTunes, Windows Media Player, RealPlayer, MusicMatch Jukebox, MediaMonkey oder Foobar2000 können CDs rippen. Der No23 Recorder ermöglicht zudem das Aufnehmen von Audio-Streams. Ein entsprechendes Programm für Internet-Radio-Streams ist der Streamripper.

Mientras el dispositivo original es típicamente digital, también puede denominarse "ripear" a la extracción de medios analógicos, como un vídeo VHS, o un vinilo. Lo scopo del ripping può essere quello di avere copie di backup dei propri supporti originali ma viene fatto spesso anche con lo scopo di distribuire tale materiale su reti peer-to-peer, distribuzione illegale quando il materiale è coperto da copyright. Colui che effettua il ripping viene chiamato nel gergo informatico ripper o a volte bravo copiatore. Alcuni esempi comuni di ripping sono: l'estrazione di brani da un CD Audio al disco fisso in un formato di file digitale l'estrazione di un filmato da un DVD al disco fisso in un formato diverso come DivX o Xvid.

Или же VHS, телепередачи конвертируют в DVD (например DVD5 или DVD9 для классических DVD проигрывателей).
