Riga Cathedral is the Protestant Cathedral in Riga, Latvia. Built near the Daugava River in 1211 by Albert of Riga, it is considered the largest medieval church in the Baltic states. Certainly one of the most recognizable landmarks in Latvia, the Cathedral is featured in or the subject of paintings, photographs and television travelogues.
  • Der Dom zu Riga wurde im Jahre 1211 durch Albrecht von Buxthoeven erbaut und ist die größte baltische Kirche. Durch mehrfache Umbauten ist der Baustil heute nicht mehr rein erkennbar. Aus gotischer Zeit besticht das Nordportal (früher Haupteingang) durch seine Gestaltung. Von den geplanten zwei Türmen wurde aus Geldmangel nur ein Turm errichtet, der 1547 ausbrannte. 1595 wurde ein neuer Turm - teilweise aus Holz - errichtet, der mit 140 m der höchste Kirchturm Rigas war (der Turm der Petrikirche war um einige Meter niedriger). Der Turm wurde im Laufe der Jahrhunderte baufällig (Abmorschen verschiedener Holzkonstruktionen), so dass er 1776 durch den heutigen 90 m hohen Turm in barockem Stil ersetzt wurde. Die ursprüngliche Ausgestaltung des Gotteshauses fiel im Jahr 1524 Bilderstürmern der Reformation zum Opfer, der Brand von 1547 tat sein Übriges. Heute erscheint das Innere der Kirche in barocker und manieristischer Ausgestaltung. Sehenswert sind der Gedenkstein der kleinen Gilden (19. Jh. ), die barocken Schnitzereien auf der Holzkanzel (um 1641) und das Grab des ersten Bischofs von Livland, Meinhard. Ursprünglich stand die Kirche auf einer kleinen Erhöhung. Heute befindet sich die Kirche unter dem Straßenniveau, weil die umliegenden Straßen zur Verringerung der Überschwemmungsgefahr durch die Düna mehrmals aufgeschüttet wurden.
