He left DC to form his own shoe company with Mike Carroll, Lakai Footwear. He owns the Crailtap distribution company, which in turn owns such companies as Royal Trucks and Chocolate Skateboards. The fakie frontside big spin heelflip is named the Rick flip after him, although it is not known whether he invented it or not. Howard has had some serious injuries such as a torn ACL and a shattered shoulder but has recovered from both and excelled in skateboarding.
