Richard Paltauf (February 9, 1858 – 1924) was an Austrian pathologist and bacteriologist born in Judenburg, Styria. In 1880 he received his medical doctorate at the University of Graz, and from 1881 to 1883 was an assistant to pathologist Hans Kundrat (1845-1893) in Graz. Afterwards, he remained as Kundrat's assistant at the University of Vienna, where in 1888 he obtained his habilitation in pathological anatomy.

From 1900 until his death in 1924 he was a full professor of general and experimental pathology. With Anton Weichselbaum (1845-1920), he was responsible for introducing bacteriology and serology at Vienna. Also he founded a serotherapeutical institute as well as a institution for vaccination against rabies, and with Carl Sternberg (1872-1935), he conducted important research of lymphogranulomatosis.

Paltauf studierte in Graz und wurde 1880 zum Dr. med. promoviert. Anschließend war er Assistent bei Hans Kundrat (1845-1893) in Graz und Wien. 1888 wurde er in Wien für pathologische Anatomie habilitiert und wurde 1892 außerordentlicher Professor für allgemeine Pathologie und pathologische Histologie. 1893 wurde der Prosektor an der k. k. Krankenanstalt Rudolfstiftung und wurde zu dieser Zeit auch Leiter des Universitätsinstituts für pathologische Histologie und Bakteriologie. Paltauf wurde 1898 ordentlicher Professor für pathologische Histologie und allgemeine Pathologie und seit 1900 Ordinarius für allgemeine und experimentelle Pathologie. Er gründete das Serotherapeutische Institut in Wien und eine Impfstation gegen Tollwut. Er führte - zusammen mit Anton Weichselbaum (1845–1920) - die Bakteriologie und Serologie in Wien ein.
