- Richard Hofstadter (August 6, 1916–October 24, 1970) was an American historian and DeWitt Clinton Professor of American History at Columbia University. One of the leading public intellectuals of the 1950s, his works include The Age of Reform (1955) and Anti-intellectualism in American Life (1963), both of which won the Pulitzer Prize—the former for History and the latter for General Non-Fiction—as well as Social Darwinism in American Thought, 1860-1915 (1944), The American Political Tradition (1948), and The Paranoid Style in American Politics (1964). Hofstadter became the "iconic historian of postwar liberal consensus" and 21st century scholars continue to admire his books and essays for the grace of his writing, the depth of his insight, his use of the past to illuminate contemporary issues, and his ability to simultaneously engage a scholarly and a popular audience.

Ihm wurde für Anti-intellectualism in American Life 1963 zudem der Ralph-Waldo-Emerson-Preis der Phi Beta Kappa Society zuerkannt. Seine Schrift Social Darwinism in American Thought, 1860–1915 (1944), welche aus seiner Dissertation hervorging, zählt als das grundlegende Werk zur Erforschung des Sozialdarwinismus und gilt bis heute als die meistzitierte Publikation zu diesem Gebiet. Bedeutend ist das Werk auch deswegen, weil Hofstadter mit dem Werk den Begriff „Sozialdarwinismus“, welcher vorher nur sehr vereinzelt und in einer etwas anderen Form gebraucht wurde, in seinem heutigen Gebrauch als Begriff in der historischen Forschung etabliert und populär machte. Ausserdem stellt er den Sozialdarwinismus als theoretische Grundlage des Laissez-faire Kapitalismus dar. Personifiziert wird diese Verbindung nach Hofstadter u.a. in der Person des Industriellen Andrew Carnegies, welcher sozialdarwinistische Positionen vertrat.
