A writer on music from the late 1970s until his death, he was a prominent contributor to the NME, the jazz critic for The Sunday Times and more recently music writer for the New Statesman. Cook was formerly editor of The Wire, when it was a jazz centred periodical (although it broadened its coverage towards the end of his editorship), and edited Jazz Review magazine from its foundation in 1998; Jazz Review continues, using Cook's attitudes as ongoing inspiration and did not name a specific successor (Morton) for six months. Cook also presented a programme on jazz for BBC local radio GLR. Richard Cook was formerly the UK jazz catalogue manager for PolyGram (1992-97) and also produced albums by the trumpeter Guy Barker. During his spell at PolyGram, Cook launched the short-lived 'Redial' re-issue line of classic British jazz albums. In 2002, he was responsible for issuing a 10 CD limited-edition set by the American avant-garde pianist Cecil Taylor of 1990 recordings, 2Ts for a Lovely T, which was on the Codanza label. Richard Cook died of cancer on 25 August 2007, aged 50, in London.

Er entschied sich trotz guter Noten gegen ein Studium und begann in den 1970er-Jahren (zunächst nebenberuflich) als Musikjournalist bei der Zeitschrift „NME“, wo er Anfang der 1980er-Jahre fest angestellt war. Er schrieb dabei keineswegs nur über Jazz, sondern über die ganze Bandbreite der Populärmusik. 1985 bis 1992 war er Herausgeber des Jazz-Magazins „The Wire“ und Herausgeber für den zugehörigen Verlag „Quartet Books“. Außerdem schrieb er über Jazz z. B. in der „The Sunday Times“ (später im „New Statesman“) und moderierte ein wöchentliches Jazzprogramm im Radiosender GLR (später auch für „Jazz FM“). Zwischen 1992 und 1997 war er für das Jazzprogramm von „Polygram UK Records“ zuständig, wo er u. a. Alben des britischen Modern Jazz neu herausbrachte („Redial“ Serie) und den Trompeter Guy Barker produzierte. Außerdem war er Herausgeber des „Jazz Review“ und Autor mehrerer Standardwerke über Jazz (u. a. 2001 einer Geschichte von Blue Note Records) und des Penguin Guide to Jazz Recordings (gemeinsam mit Brian Morton). Cook war auch Ko-Autor eines Theaterstücks („A sparkling evening with Caroline Jackson“). Er starb 2007 im Alter von 50 Jahren an Krebs.
