Puryear, born in Mecklenburg County, Virginia, moved to Surry County, North Carolina as a child. He became a planter near Huntsville, and served as a militia colonel and the magistrate of Surry County before being elected to the North Carolina House of Commons.

Puryear served terms in the North Carolina House in 1838, 1844, 1846, and 1852, as well as a term in the North Carolina Senate before being elected as a Whig to the U.S. House in 1852. He was re-elected in 1854 as a candidate of the American Party, and ran unsuccessfully for a third term in 1856. Puryear was a delegate to the Provisional Confederate Congress in 1861 and to the Peace Congress following the American Civil War. He returned to farming and died as his plantation, "Shallow Ford," in Yadkin County in 1867.

Puryear diente in der Miliz als Colonel und war auch Magistrat von Surry County. Er wurde vier Mal, 1838, 1844, 1846 und noch einmal 1852, in das Repräsentantenhaus von North Carolina gewählt. Ferner war er eine Amtszeit im Senat von North Carolina tätig. Anschließend kandidierte er zwei Mal erfolgreich, einmal 1852 als Whig und dann noch einmal 1854 als Kandidat der American Party, um einen Sitz im US-Kongress. Danach machte er noch einen Anlauf auf den 35. US-Kongress, aber scheiterte. Puryear war vom 4. März 1853 bis zum 3. März 1857 im US-Repräsentantenhaus tätig. Als sich dann sein Heimatstaat 1861 von der Union loslöste, vertrat er diesen als Delegierter im Provisorischen Konföderiertenkongress in Richmond. Nach dem Krieg war er Delegierter bei dem Peace Congress in Philadelphia. Danach ging er wieder seinen landwirtschaftlichen Arbeiten nach. Er verstarb auf seiner Plantage, „Shallow Ford“, in Yadkin County und wurde dort auf dem Familienfriedhof beigesetzt.
