Republika was a Polish rock band from the 1980s. The group formed in Toruń, Poland, in 1979 as Res Publica and began playing Jethro Tull-style progressive rock. This type of music proved to be unpopular with fans, so the original leader, Jann Castor, also known as Wiesław Ruciński, quit the band and emigrated to Australia, where, after releasing 2 CDs ("PRECEDENCE", "RED EXPRESS"), he was nominated for Australian Grammy (Aria) (see links below the article).

In 1981, Grzegorz Ciechowski [ˈgʑɛgɔʂ tɕɛˈxɔfskʲi], taking over as the new head, moved the group's sound from prog rock closer to New Wave and rechristened the band to Republika. He did not, however, completely abandon the band's roots; rather, he adapted Ian Anderson's "heavy-metal flute" into a "New-Wave flute" which featured prominently in such early tracks as Nowe sytuacje and Kombinat. The group disbanded in 2001 following Ciechowski's death during surgery.

In jener Zeit entstanden drei Langspielplatten (Nowe Sytuacje, 1984 und Nieustanne Tango). Mitte der 80er Jahre nahm Ciechowski eine musikalische Auszeit von der Band und gründete eine neue Gruppe mit dem Namen Obywatel G.C. (Bürger G. C. ), die mit der Platte Obywatel G.C. (1986), besonders aber mit dem legendären Album Tak! Tak! von 1988 auch großen kommerziellen Erfolg hatte. Im freien Polen gab es 1991 ein Revival von Republika.

W wyniku nieporozumień Republika rozpadła się w 1986 roku, by powrócić w 1990. W latach 90. zespół prowadził czynną działalność nagraniowo-koncertową. W 2001 roku po śmierci lidera i wokalisty Grzegorza Ciechowskiego grupa przestała istnieć.
