The Republic of Central Lithuania or Middle Lithuania, or simply Central Lithuania, was a short-lived political entity which did not gain international recognition. It was created in 1920 following the staged rebellion of soldiers of the 1st Lithuanian-Belarusian Infantry Division of the Polish Army, supported by the Polish air force, cavalry and artillery.

Centered around the historical capital of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Vilna, for eighteen months the entity served as a buffer state between Poland, upon which it depended, and Lithuania, which claimed the area. After a variety of delays, a disputed election took place on January 8 1922, and the territory was annexed to Poland. The Polish-Lithuanian borders in the interwar period, while recognized by the Conference of Ambassadors of the Entente and the League of Nations, were not recognized by the Republic of Lithuania. In 1931 an international court in the Hague issued the determination that the Polish seizure and ongoing control of the city was a violation of international law.

Oktober 1920 proklamierte Żeligowski zusammen mit einer provisorischen Regierung den Staat "Mittellitauen". Nachdem die Bemühungen Polens um die Wiederherstellung seiner Staatsgrenzen von 1772 (unter Einschluss ganz Litauens) oder entsprechende konföderative Zusammenschlüsse gescheitert waren, stimmte das Parlament Mittellitauens am 20. Februar 1922 für einen Anschluss an Polen, das sich das Gebiet am 16. April 1922 einverleibte. Litauen erklärte daraufhin Kaunas zu seiner provisorischen Hauptstadt, gab aber seinen Anspruch auf Vilnius nicht auf. 1939 wurde Polen im geheimen Zusatzprotokoll zum Hitler-Stalin-Pakt entlang einer Demarkationslinie zwischen dem Deutschen Reich und der Sowjetunion aufgeteilt. Der Westteil des ehemaligen Mittellitauen mit der Stadt Vilnius wurde 1940 an die Litauische SSR gegeben, die Teil der Sowjetunion wurde, der Ostteil fiel an Weißrussland. Centrée sur Vilnius, capitale historique du Grand-duché de Lituanie, la République sert durant ses dix-huit mois d'existence d'État tampon entre la Pologne, dont elle dépend, et la Lituanie, qui la revendique. Après plusieurs retards, des élections contestées ont lieu le 8 janvier 1922, et le territoire est annexé par la Pologne.
