Die einzig verbliebene europäische Fabrik in Landshut wurde im November 2008 per Management-Buyout an die Landshut Silicon Foundry verkauft. Renesas entstand am 1. April 2003 durch die Ausgliederung und Fusion der Halbleiterbereiche von Hitachi und Mitsubishi Electric. Beide Mütter sind Anteilseigner (Hitachi 55%, Mitsubishi Electric 45%) von Renesas. Der Name Renesas steht für Renaissance Semiconductor for Advanced Solutions. Am 27. April 2009 gaben Renesas Technology und NEC Electronics bekannt, in Verhandlungen mit dem Ziel der Zusammenführung ihrer Geschäftsaktivitäten einzutreten. Die Verhandlungen sollen bis Ende Juli 2009 in entsprechende Verträge münden, das zusammengeführte Unternehmen als Aktiengesellschaft zum April 2010 den Betrieb aufnehmen.
