In 1985, Rosnes was awarded a Canada Council of the Arts grant, and moved to New York City to further her studies. After saxophonist Joe Henderson hired her to play with his quartet, she began an international career. Since then, Rosnes has worked with many of the top names in jazz including: JJ Johnson, Wayne Shorter, James Moody, Bobby Hutcherson and Jon Faddis among others. She is a founding member of the SFJAZZ Collective : an all-star octet whose members have included Joshua Redman, Bobby Hutcherson, Brian Blade, Bob Hurst, Eric Harland, Nicholas Payton, Miguel Zenon, Andre Hayward, and as of summer 2007, Dave Douglas, Joe Lovano and Stefon Harris. Rosnes made four Japanese recordings for the VideoArts label with The Drummonds, a trio featuring herself, drummer and ex-husband Billy Drummond and the unrelated Ray Drummond on bass. Rosnes married jazz pianist Bill Charlap on 25 August 2007.

J. Johnson, James Moody und Wayne Shorter. Auf ihrem Debütalbum spielte sie mit Shorter, Herbie Hancock und Branford Marsalis Duos ein. Anschließend legte sie regelmäßig eigene Produktionen vor, die in Nordamerika sehr erfolgreich waren. Daneben arbeitete sie mit dem Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, mit der Carnegie Hall Jazz Band von Jon Faddis und mit The Drummonds (gemeinsam mit ihrem Ex-Mann Billy Drummond und dem nicht-verschwägerten Ray Drummond).
