René Goupil was a French missionary and one of the first North American martyrs of the Roman Catholic Church. He was baptized in St-Martin-du-Bois near Angers, France in 1608 on the 15th of May. He volunteered to work with the Jesuits in the hospitals of Quebec. In 1642, he travelled to the Huron missions in New York with Father Isaac Jogues. He was captured by the Iroquois as a French Military Spy and tortured.

After teaching the native children the sign of the cross, he was killed by a tomahawk blow to the head near the current site of Auriesville, New York. He was canonized on 29 June 1930 by Pope Pius XI along with seven other Canadian Martyrs. He is the patron saint of anesthetists. Fordham University has a student dormitory named after Rene Goupil at its Rose Hill Campus in the Bronx, New York.

Il se porta volontaire pour travailler comme donné avec les jésuites dans les hôpitaux du Canada. En 1640, Goupil est à la mission de Saint-Joseph de Sillery. En 1642, lors d'un voyage par canot vers les missions huronnes avec le père Isaac Jogues, il fut capturé et torturé par les Iroquois. Après avoir enseigné le signe de la croix aux jeunes amérindiens, il fut tué par un coup de tomahawk sur la tête, et il prononça le nom de Jésus en mourant. Il se trouvait proche du site actuel d'Auriesville dans l'État de New York. Son décès a été rapporté dans les Relations des Jésuites. Il fut canonisé par Pie XI le 29 juin 1930 avec les sept autres martyrs canadiens. Il est le saint patron des anesthésistes.
