The religions of the world consist of religious images and religious behaviour. The religious images of the religions from the past and of present day religions, like gods, ghosts and worshipped ancestors, concepts of guilt, dogmatic teachings and ideas of the hereafter, are generally quite well known. Religious behaviour on the other hand, the actions which believers of a specific religion do or do not do, is often not that well known.

For an understanding of religion however, religious behaviour is at least as important as the religious images.
  • De godsdiensten van de wereld bestaan zowel uit godsdienstige voorstellingen als uit godsdienstig gedrag. De godsdienstige voorstellingen van de godsdiensten uit het heden en verleden, zoals de goden, geesten en voorouders die aanbeden worden, voorstellingen van zonde en schuld, eventuele dogmatische leerstellingen en hiernamaalsvoorstellingen, zijn over het algemeen redelijk goed bestudeerd. Het godsdienstige gedrag daarentegen, de handelingen die de gelovigen van een bepaalde godsdienst uitvoeren of nalaten, is vaak minder bekend. Toch is dit godsdienstige gedrag minstens even belangrijk voor een goed begrip van de godsdienst als de godsdienstige voorstellingswereld.
