- Rehabilitation means; To restore to useful life, as through therapy and education or To restore to good condition, operation, or capacity. The assumption of rehabilitation is that people are not permanently criminal and that it is possible to restore a criminal to a useful life, to a life in which they contribute to themselves and to society. A goal of rehabilitation is to prevent habitual offending, also known as criminal recidivism. Rather than punishing the harm out of a criminal, rehabilitation would seek, by means of education or therapy, to bring a criminal into a more normal state of mind, or into an attitude which would be helpful to society, rather than be harmful to society. This theory of punishment is based on the notion that punishment is to be inflicted on an offender so as to reform him/her, or rehabilitate them so as to make their re-integration into society easier. Punishments that are in accordance with this theory are community service, probation orders, and any form of punishment which entails any form of guidance and aftercare towards the offender. This theory is founded on the belief that one cannot inflict a severe punishment of imprisonment and expect the offender to be reformed and to be able to re-integrate into society upon his release. Although the importance of inflicting punishment on those persons who breach the law, so as to maintain social order, is retained, the importance of rehabilitation is also given priority. Humanitarians have, over the years, supported rehabilitation as an alternative, even for capital punishment.
- Der Begriff der Resozialisierung geht von der Vorstellung aus, ein Straftäter habe sich durch seine Tat außerhalb der Gesellschaft gestellt oder jedenfalls offenbart, dass er nicht im erforderlichen Maße in diese Gesellschaft eingebunden sei. Ziel des staatlichen Strafens habe es daher zu sein, den Täter wieder in die Gesellschaft einzugliedern. Dabei ist zwischen dem Zweck der Strafverhängung und dem Ziel des Strafvollzuges zu unterscheiden. Im ersteren Fall gilt die Resozialisierung (als eine Form positiver Spezialprävention) als ein möglicher Strafzweck neben anderen, im zweiten Fall wird die "Resozialisierung als Vollzugsziel" von der herrschenden Meinung als alleiniges Ziel des Vollzuges angesehen (vgl. Feest 2006). Der Begriff Resozialisierung wird vielfach (auch vom deutschen Bundesverfassungsgericht) synonym mit dem der Re-Sozialisation gebraucht. Dieser Begriff verweist stärker auf Defizite der (vor allem frühkindlichen) Sozialisation, welche am ehesten therapeutisch bearbeitet werden könnten.
- De reclassering helpt (ex-)gedetineerden bij hun terugkeer in de maatschappij. In Nederland wordt de reclassering uitgevoerd door de Stichting Reclassering Nederland (SRN), de Stichting Verslavingsreclassering GGZ (SVG) van GGZ Nederland, het Leger des Heils Jeugdzorg & Reclassering van het Leger des Heils en de Bureaus Jeugdzorg voor de jeugdreclassering. Deze zelfstandige organisaties worden bijna volledig gefinancierd door het ministerie van Justitie.
- Resocjalizacja – proces modyfikacji osobowości jednostki społecznej w celu przystosowania jej do życia w danej zbiorowości, a w węższym rozumieniu w społeczeństwie polegający na tym, iż poprzez odpowiednie zabiegi kształtuje się jej normy społeczne i wartości, których nie miała ona możliwości przyswoić wcześniej w trakcie socjalizacji jednocześnie powodując, iż rezygnuje ona z przyswojonych do tej pory reguł działania będących sprzecznymi z systemem aksjonormatywnym tej zbiorowości/społeczeństwa. W każdym społeczeństwie istnieją odpowiednie instytucje, dzięki którym może odbywać się resocjalizacja. Funkcję osób dokonujących resocjalizacji mogą pełnić zarówno szamani, księża, pedagodzy jak i psychologowie w zależności od typu zbiorowości do której należy jednostka. Sama resocjalizacja może odbywać się na terenie więzienia, w zakładach poprawczych czy w kościele, lecz także w szkole, rodzinie czy w zakładzie pracy. Jest one pomocne przy błędach społeczeństwa .
