It was founded in 1982 as Embassy International Pictures, but the company name changed to avoid confusion with Norman Lear's Embassy Pictures (known from 1975-1982 as Avco Embassy Pictures). Its most successful film is Mr. & Mrs. Smith, released on June 10, 2005. Its films were distributed by Warner Bros. until 1997, and by 20th Century Fox from 1998 to the present.

Eine Ausnahme bildet der deutschsprachige Raum, für welchen ein Vertriebs- und Finanzierungsabkommen mit Epsilon Motion Pictures besteht, einer ehemaligen Kirch-Tochter, die im November 2005 von Kinowelt gekauft wurde. Bekannte Produktionen sind Sommersby oder auch Heat, sowie die Fernsehserie Malcolm mittendrin. Bis 2007 besitzt Regency die weltweiten Übertragungsrechte für Turniere der Vereinigung der professioniellen Tennisspielerinnen WTA. Mittlerweile stehen bei Regency über 100 Titel zur Auswahl.
