Er wird oft mit dem Tatarischen Hartriegel (Cornus alba), der auch Weißer Hartriegel (alba = weiß) genannt wird, gleichgesetzt, dem er zwar äußerlich sehr ähnlich sieht, von dem er sich jedoch durch die Form und Größe seiner Steinkerne sowie durch seine Herkunft unterscheidet.
