En el proceso, se van colocando dos maderas paralelas, entre las que vierte tierra en tongadas de 10 ó 15 cm, y se compactada mediante apisonado. La tierra compactada se deseca al sol, y una vez que la tapia o tapial queda levantado, las puertas y ventanas se abren a cincel.

Il muro può avere uno spessore variabile ed è realizzato a strati, battendo l'argilla con strumenti in legno dalla testa larga, a punta o a cuneo, in modo da renderla compatta ed accelerare la sua essiccazione. Una volta che la terra si è indurita, si procede al disarmo della cassaforma per riarmarla di fianco mantenendo un poco di contatto con la parte realizzata in precedenza. Questo procedimento si ripete fino a che non si raggiunge l'altezza desiderata.
