Schon in ihrer frühen Kindheit spielte Rachel Portman verschiedene Instrumente. Im Alter von 13 Jahren begann sie zu komponieren. Sie absolvierte an der Universität Oxford den Abschluss in Klassischer Musik, Komposition und Orchestration. Dort schrieb sie auch 1982 für den erfolgreichen Studentenfilm Privileged mit dem jungen Hugh Grant in der Hauptrolle ihre erste Filmmusik. Nach ihrem Studium arbeitete sie vor allem in der Fernsehspiele-Abteilung des BBC Channel 4. 1988 gewann sie den Young Composer Of The Year-Award vom britischen Filminstitut. 1991 wurde sie von der British Academy of Film and Television Arts in der Kategorie Best Score für den Fernseh-Dreiteiler Orangen sind nicht die einzige Frucht nominiert. 1992 gelang ihr der Durchbruch in Hollywood mit dem Film Used People von Beeban Kidron. 1997 bekam sie als erste Frau den Oscar für die beste Filmmusik in dem Film Emma. Seitdem bekam sie schon zwei weitere Oscar-Nominierungen. Portman bevorzugt natürliche Musikinstrumente wie ein Klavier und verzichtet nahezu vollständig auf elektrische Instrumente wie Synthesizer. Aber Portman komponiert nicht nur Filmmusik. Am 31. Mai 2003 wurde in Houston ihre Oper Der kleine Prinz nach dem Buch von Antoine de Saint-Exupéry uraufgeführt. Portman ist seit 1995 mit den Filmproduzenten Uberto Pasolini verheiratet und hat drei Kinder (Anna, Giulia und Niky).
