Réseaux IP Européens (RIPE, French for "European IP Networks") is a forum open to all parties with an interest in the technical development of the Internet. The RIPE community’s objective is to ensure that the administrative and technical coordination necessary to maintain and develop the Internet continues. It is not a standardisation organisation like the IETF and does not deal with domain names like ICANN. RIPE is not a legal entity and has no formal membership.

The RIPE community’s objective is to ensure that the administrative and technical coordination necessary to maintain and develop the Internet continues. It is not a standardisation organisation like the IETF and does not deal with domain names like ICANN. RIPE is not a legal entity and has no formal membership. This means that anybody who is interested in the work of RIPE can participate through mailing lists and by attending meetings. RIPE has a chairman to keep an eye on work between RIPE Meetings and to be its external liaison. Rob Blokzijl was the spokesperson at the start and later the chairman. The RIPE community interacts via RIPE Mailing Lists, RIPE Working Groups and RIPE Meetings. Although similar in name, the RIPE NCC and RIPE are separate entities. The RIPE NCC provides administrative support to RIPE, such as the facilitation of RIPE Meetings and providing administrative support to RIPE Working Groups. It was established in 1992 by the RIPE community to serve as an administrative body.

RIPE NCC är en Europeisk icke vinstinriktad organisation vars mål är att administrera Internets infrastruktur. RIPE NCC är en av fem RIR (Regional Internet Registry). Andra RIR:ar som finns i världen är AfriNIC, APNIC, ARIN samt LACNIC, och dess topporganisation heter ICANN. Medlemmar i en RIR är i regel internet-operatörer, Telekom-bolag eller större företag. För en normal ADSL-kund där ISP:n använder DHCP mot kunden (surfaren) så står ISP'n som ägare i Whois-databasen till IP-adressen. Varje LIR har som krav från sin RIR att noga hushålla med sina IPv4-adresser då det råder brist på dessa. Bristen beror på att användningen av internet nu är så omfattande att adresserna helt enkelt håller på att ta slut. En lösning som är framtagen är att gå mot IPv6. En IPv4-adress består av 32 bitar och en IPv6 adress består av 128 bitar. Detta innebär att adressrymden går från 4.3×10 (IPv4) till den smått enorma siffran 3.4×10, dvs långt mycket mer än en IP-adress per person i hela världen. IPv6 är dock förenat med stora kostnader för alla inblandade, därför att hårdvara i internets infrastruktur samt mjukvara måste bytas ut eller kompletteras för IPv6-kompatibilitet. Detta har medför att introduktionen av IPv6 därför går trögt. Dessutom har funktionen NAT dämpat det mest akuta behovet IPv4-adresser. IPv6 har dock sakta men säkert börjat ta fart i Asien, för att Europa och Nordamerika av historiska skäl har de största tilldelningarna av IPv4-adresser.
