Genutzt wird er durch Einheiten der United States Air Forces in Europe (USAFE), die dort ein Geschwader, das 48th Fighter Wing, genannt Liberty Wing mit drei Staffeln von Kampfflugzeugen vom Typ F-15 stationiert hat. Keine zehn Kilometer südwestlich liegt ein weiterer britischer Militärflugplatz, RAF Mildenhall, auf dem ebenfalls die USAFE stationiert ist. Zusammen bilden sie den größten Standort der United States Air Force in Großbritannien; allein in Lakenheath sind etwa 4.500 Soldaten und 2.000 Zivilisten tätig. Der Militärflugplatz entstand 1940 zunächst als Schein-Ziel für die deutsche Luftwaffe: Mit Leuchten und aus Sperrholz gefertigten Flugzeugattrappen sollten deutsche Flugzeuge verwirrt werden, die den benachbarten Flugplatz Mildenhall bombardieren würden. Im Anschluss entstand ein Militärflugplatz mit drei Start- und Landebahnen in A-Form, der im Zweiten Weltkrieg bei der Bombardierung deutscher Städte eine Rolle spielte. 1944 wurde der Flugplatz geschlossen, doch schon im Frühjahr 1947 durch die Vereinigten Staaten in Zeiten des Kalten Krieges wiederbelebt. Später wurden hier Einsätze gegen Libyen und den Irak im Zweiten Golfkrieg geflogen. Der Flugplatz kam in den Blick der deutschen Öffentlichkeit, als am 2. März 2011 mehrere Soldaten des Stützpunktes bei einer Schießerei am Frankfurter Flughafen getötet wurden.
