- The Répertoire International des Sources Musicales (Abbreviation RISM, English International Inventory of Musical Sources, German Internationales Quellenlexikon der Musik) is an international non-profit organisation, founded in Paris in 1952, with the aim of comprehensively documenting sources of music surviving all over the world. It is the largest organisation of its kind and the only entity operating globally to document written musical sources. The musical sources recorded are hand-written or printed music, writings about music and libretti. They are stored in libraries, archives, monasteries, schools and private collections. RISM establishes what exists and where it is kept. RISM is recognised among experts as the key place for documenting music sources all over the world. The work of RISM in compiling a comprehensive index fulfills a twofold purpose: on the one hand, the musical legacy is protected from loss, and on the other, it is made available to academics and performing musicians.

International Inventory of Musical Sources) ist eine 1952 in Paris gegründete, länderübergreifende und gemeinnützig orientierte Organisation mit dem Ziel, die weltweit überlieferten Quellen zur Musik umfassend zu dokumentieren. Die Organisation ist das größte und einzige global operierende Unternehmen zur Dokumentation schriftlicher musikalischer Quellen. Die erfassten musikalischen Quellen sind handschriftliche oder gedruckte Noten, Schriften über Musik und Textbücher. Sie werden in Bibliotheken, Archiven, Klöstern, Schulen und Privatsammlungen aufbewahrt. RISM weist nach, was vorhanden ist und wo es aufbewahrt wird. In der Fachwelt ist RISM als zentrale Nachweisstelle für Quellen der Musik weltweit anerkannt. Durch die Katalogisierung in einem umfassenden Lexikon werden die musikalischen Überlieferungen einerseits vor Verlust geschützt und andererseits der Musikwissenschaft und ausführenden Musikern zugänglich gemacht.

Es la mayor organización de su especie y la única entidad que opera de manera global para documentar las fuentes musicales escritas. Las fuentes musicales que se registran son música manuscrita o impresa, escritos sobre música y libretos, que se custodian en bibliotecas, archivos, monasterios, escuelas y colecciones privadas. RISM establece lo que existe, y dónde se conserva. RISM es reconocido entre los expertos como el lugar clave para documentar las fuentes musicales en todo el mundo. Internationales Quellenlexikon der Musik) è un’organizzazione internazionale fondata nel 1952 a Parigi, con lo scopo di documentare più esaustivamente possibile le fonti musicali presenti in tutto il mondo. A livello internazionale è l’impresa più grande e più diffusa mai realizzata nell’ambito della documentazione delle fonti musicali scritte. Le fonti musicali oggetto di quest’impresa includono composizioni manoscritte e a stampa, nonché scritti sulla musica e libretti. Di tutto questo patrimonio mondiale, conservato in biblioteche, archivi, conventi, conservatori o collezioni private, il RISM documenta di cosa si tratti e dove sia conservato. Tra gli specialisti il RISM è universalmente riconosciuto come riferimento centrale nell’ambito delle fonti musicali. Attraverso una catalogazione esaustiva, i documenti musicali sono, da un lato maggiormente protetti dal rischio di perdita, dall’altro resi accessibili alla musicologia ed alla pratica musicale.
