Today, this is evident already before entering Qardaha, as the broad Syrian coastal highway makes an inexplicable pass into the mountains just to reach Qardaha. Qardaha has some luxurious villas dominate parts of the town. A major statue of Hafez al-Assad is found in the town center, and a huge mausoleum containing the graves of Basil al-Assad and Hafez al-Assad is also located there. Hasan Alkhayer was also born in Qardaha. The Aramaic meaning of Qardaha is the first village.
  • Qardaha (arabisch ‏القرداحة‎ al-Qardāḥa; manchmal auch Kardaha geschrieben) ist eine Kleinstadt an den Hängen des Alawitengebirges in der im Nordwesten Syriens gelegenen Provinz Latakia. Im Ort leben überwiegend Alawiten. Qardaha liegt etwa 30 Kilometer von Lattakia entfernt und ist der Heimatort des langjährigen syrischen Präsidenten Hafiz al-Assad, der 1930 in eine regional angesehene Familie von Landwirten geboren wurde. Später wurde Assad Offizier und Politiker der Baath-Partei. Bei seiner Beisetzung am 13. Juni 2000 erlebte der Ort ein beeindruckendes Staatsbegräbnis, an dem zahlreiche arabische Präsidenten und westliche Außenminister teilnahmen. In dem 1994 gebauten Mausoleum wurde auch Assads ältester Sohn Basil beigesetzt. Assads Kenotaph steht in der Mitte des Kuppelbaus, der seines Sohnes an einer Seite. Zur Zeit von Assads Geburt hatte der Ort etwa 1800 Einwohner, zu Beginn seiner Präsidentschaft 1971 waren es 3357 Einwohner. Qardaha kann mit Al-Qardaha einen erfolgreichen Fußballverein aufweisen.
