Another notable feature is the appeal of the festival to young people, both in terms of the large youthful audience it attracts and through its efforts to develop and promote young talent. In 1999, the Pusan Promotion Plan was established to connect new directors to funding sources.

Das Festival ist beim Filmproduzentenverband FIAPF als internationales Filmfestival mit spezialisiertem Wettbewerb akkreditiert, wobei sich diese Spezialisierung auf neue asiatische Filme bezieht. Der Korean Cinema Award hingegen geht nicht etwa an einen koreanischen Regisseur, sondern an nicht-koreanische Personen, die sich um die Förderung des koreanischen Films im Ausland verdient gemacht haben. Daneben werden in Busan noch andere Auszeichnungen vergeben, darunter eine für den asiatischen Filmemacher des Jahres und der FIPRESCI-Preis. Das Pusan International Film Festival hat auch einen großen Filmmarkt für asiatische Filme. Seit 2005 findet im Rahmen des Festivals die Asian Film Academy statt, die drei Wochen lang jungen Filmschaffenden aus ganz Asien offen steht. 2005 gewann das österreichischen Architekturbüro Coop Himmelb(l)au die Ausschreibung zur Errichtung des Busan Cinema Centers als neuem Festivalzentrum.

Engagé en faveur du nouveau cinéma et du cinéma d'auteur, il demeure aussi l'un des plus gros marchés du film. Le premier festival, qui s'est tenue du 13 au 21 septembre, 1996, a été aussi le premier festival international du film en Corée. L'objectif du PIFF est l'introduction de nouveaux films et la révélation de nouveaux talents. Depuis sa création, il a ainsi révélé des cinéastes tels que Jia Zhangke, Hong Sang-soo, Kim Ki-duk, Im Sang-soo, Hur Jin-ho et Fruit Chan. Le festival comporte différents sections consacrées aux films de fiction et documentaires de long et court métrage. Les deux principales sections sont : New Currents, réservée aux films asiatiques World Cinema, une présentation d'œuvres nouvelles de réalisateurs de renom combinée à une sélection des meilleurs films de l’année dans le but de faire connaître les nouvelles tendances en cinéma dans le monde. L'édition 2008 s'est déroulée du 2 au 10 octobre.
