These are given for performing stunts with the vehicle (such as power sliding, overtaking another driver, two wheels, etc). The longer you can keep it up, the more points you receive. Colliding with the guard rails and other surroundings will cause you to lose points. PGR2, PGR3 and PGR4 support gameplay via Xbox Live. The first installment in its series does not. Each cover of the Project Gotham Racing franchise has featured a Ferrari on it, starting from the F50 (PGR) to the Enzo (PGR2) and F430 (PGR3), along with the 599 GTB Fiorano (PGR4). The PGR series is the successor to Bizarre Creation's Dreamcast game Metropolis Street Racer, as evidenced by the similarities and the recycled content between the first Project Gotham Racing and Metropolis Street Racer. In September 2007, after being bought by Activision, Bizarre Creations announced that PGR4 will be the last game produced for Microsoft . The future of the franchise is uncertain. Despite the name, this series has absolutely no relation with Gotham City and Metropolis, home of DC Comics superhero Batman and Superman. Although the titles in this series contain the name 'Gotham' and 'Metropolis', the series is a full-fledged simulation racing game and not a game with a Batman and Superman theme.

Entwickelt wurden die Spiele vom britischen Entwicklungsstudio Bizarre Creations, die Rolle des Publishers übernahmen die Microsoft Game Studios. Die Spielereihe beinhaltet insgesamt vier Teile. Der vierte Teil ist 2007 auf der Xbox 360 erschienen. PGR und PGR2 erschienen ausschließlich auf Microsofts Spielekonsole Xbox, PGR3 und PGR4 auf deren Nachfolger Xbox 360. Metropolis Street Racer ist der Vorgänger dieser Spiele und erschien auf Segas Dreamcast (Metropolis ist die Heimatstadt des bekannten Comic-Helden Superman). Da die Namensrechte aber immer noch bei Sega liegen, bediente man sich für das Xbox-Spiel (zunächst nur als Arbeitstitel, der allerdings für die Verkaufsversion übernommen wurde) der Heimatstadt eines weiteren Comic-Protagonisten, nämlich Batman. Anders als diese Namen es vermuten lassen, begibt man sich als Spieler nicht in fiktive, sondern in Nachbauten realer Städte, wie London oder Florenz.
