The Principality of Bayreuth or Brandenburg-Bayreuth was a reichsfrei principality in the Holy Roman Empire centered on the Bavarian city of Bayreuth. Until 1604 it was known as the Principality of Kulmbach German: Fürstentum Kulmbach or Brandenburg-Kulmbach. The ruling Hohenzollern princes of the land were known as margraves, as the principality was a margravate (but not a march).

Het vorstendom had een opervlakte van 3960 km². In 1603 werd de residentie van Kulmbach verlegd naar Bayreuth. De laatste vorst verkocht de beide vorstendommen Ansbach en Bayreuth op 2 december 1792 aan het koninkrijk Pruisen. De pruisische regering voerde een agressieve politiek tegen de buurlanden om het gebied aan moderne grenzen te helpen en zo een efficiënter bestuur te kunnen voeren. In 1796 werd Thurnau, dat in bezit was van het prinsbisdom Bamberg bezet. Verder Ullstadt en een deel van Kalchenreuth (beide in bezit van rijksridders) en Kraftshofen (deels in bezit van de rijksstad Neurenberg). Op 20 juni 1803 werd met Beieren het Hauptlandesvergleich gesloten, waardoor een gebiedsruil mogelijk werd. Marktschorgast (voormalige prinsbisdom Bamberg), Bibart en Birklingen (beide voormalige prinsbisdom Würzburg), Lauenstein, Osternohe en Thuisbrunn werden aan Beieren afgestaan. De gebiedswinst voor Pruisen kwam voornamelijk ten goede aan het vorstendom Ansbach. In de Vrede van Tilsit in 1807 werd Pruisen gedwongen het gebied aan Frankrijk af te staan. In de volgende jaren stond het vorstendom onder direct Frans bestuur tot Frankrijk het in 1810 aan het koninkrijk Beieren afstond.
