Ze was de jongste dochter van koning George V van Hannover en diens vrouw Marie van Saksen-Altenburg. Nadat het koninkrijk van haar vader in 1866 door Pruisen was geannexeerd, bleef zij met haar moeder nog een jaar in Hannover wonen, alvorens de gehele familie zich vestigde in het Oostenrijkse Gmunden. Na de dood van haar vader, bleef ze met haar moeder wonen op het Slot Cumberland, dat haar vader in Gmunden had laten bouwen. Zij bleef ongetrouwd, hoewel ze - tot twee keer toe - ten huwelijk gevraagd was door de Britse prins Arthur, een zoon van koningin Victoria. Marie werd begraven in de crypte van Slot Cumberland, naast haar moeder, die haar drie jaar zou overleven.
