Dorothea was the second child and only daughter of Prince Philipp of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha and his wife Princess Louise-Marie of Belgium.

Zij trouwde in 1898 met Ernst Günther (1863-1921), zoon van Frederik van Sleeswijk-Holstein-Sonderburg-Augustenburg en van Adelheid van Hohenlohe-Langenburg. Het paar had geen kinderen. In plaats daarvan adopteerde het paar in 1920 Marie Louise (1908-1969) en Johan George van Sleeswijk-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg (1911-1941). Zij waren kleinkinderen van Frederik van Sleeswijk-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg, de oudere broer van koning Christiaan IX van Denemarken.
