Descendent dels reis danesos el seu pare havia rebut el ducat d'Augustenburg i era una de les branques més importants dels prínceps danesos confinats als ducats meridionals d'Schleswig i de Holstein. L'any 1848 el duc d'Augustenburg induït per l'onada nacionalista imperant a tot Europa declara la independència dels ducats i n'estableix una capital a la ciutat portuària de Kiel. Immediatament se sotmet a la protecció de Prússia. Anys després el 1862 el rei danès ocupa els territoris que consideraven aquests propietats personals des de temps immemorials iniciant-se així una guerra entre Àustria i Prússia en contra de Dinamarca. Els terrioris són dividits, mentre Àustria administrava Holstein, Prússia ho feia sobre Schleswig. Un any després la guerra esclata entre els aliats i culmina amb la batalla de Sadowa on Prússia guanyadora es queda els dos ducats. A partir d'aquest moment els Augustenburg viuen reclamant la sobirania sobre els dos terrioris ducals annexionats per Prússia. El príncep Cristià assistí a la Universitat de Bonn on féu una profunda amistat amb el futur kàiser Frederic III de Prússia. L'any 1865 el príncep Cristià coneix a la Helena del Regne Unit a Coburg. S'enamoren i es comprometen. El permís matrimonial fou concedit a canvi que la parella s'establís a Londres, a canvi el príncep Cristià rebria el tracte d'Altesa Reial al Regne Unit. La parella tingué quatre fills: SAS el príncep Cristià Víctor de Schleswig-Holstein, nascut a Londres el 1867 i mort el 1900 a la mateixa ciutat. SAS el príncep Albert de Schleswig-Holstein, nascut a Londres el 1869 i mort a la mateixa ciutat el 1931. SAS la princesa Helena Victòria de Schleswig-Holstein, nascuda a Londres el 1870 i morta a la ciutat del Tàmesis el 1948. Casada l'any 1893 amb el príncep Heribert d'Anhalt se'n divorcià l'any 1900 a causa de la seva homosexualitat. SAR la princesa Maria Lluïsa de Schleswig-Holstein, nascuda i mort a Londres el 1872 i el 1956 respectivament. El príncep Cristià morí a Londres l'any 1917 enmig de la Primera Guerra Mundial que enforntava el seu país d'origen amb el seu país d'acollida a l'edat de vuitanta-set anys. Es enterrat al Fragmore Royal Burial de Windsor.

Cristiano ed Elena si stabilirono a Frogmore House, sui terreni del Castello di Windsor, ed in seguito si trasferirono a Cumberland Lodge, nel Grande Parco di Windsor. Ebbero sei figli: Principe Cristiano Vittorio; Principe Alberto, che nel 1921 divenne Duca titolare di Schleswig-Holstein e Capo del Casato degli Oldenburg; Principessa Elena Vittoria. Hij was getrouwd met prinses Helena, de derde dochter van koningin Victoria. Prins Christiaan werd geboren te Augustenborg als de derde zoon van hertog Christiaan van Sleeswijk-Holstein-Sonderburg-Augustenburg en diens echtgenote, gravin Lovisa-Sophie Daneskjold-Samsöe. Zijn familie was betrokken bij de Sleeswijk-Holsteinse kwestie, waardoor de Eerste Duits-Deense Oorlog (1848-1852) ontstond. Prins Christiaan diende in 1852 korte tijd in deze oorlog, totdat zijn familie werd verslagen en werd gedwongen te vluchten. Na de oorlog ging prins Christiaan naar de Universiteit van Bonn, waar hij bevriend raakte met kroonprins Frederik Willem, de latere keizer van het Duitse Rijk. Toen Christiaan in september 1865 Coburg bezocht, ontmoette hij prinses Helena, de derde dochter van koningin Victoria. De twee werden verliefd en verloofden zich in december van dat jaar. Koningin Victoria gaf toestemming voor het huwelijk op voorwaarde dat het paar in Engeland zou gaan wonen. Christiaan en Helena trouwden op 5 juli 1866 in de privé-kapel van Windsor Castle. Zeven dagen voor het huwelijk schonk de koningin haar toekomstige schoonzoon het predicaat “Koninklijke Hoogheid”. Dit was echter alleen in Engeland geldig en niet in Duitsland, waar Christiaan nog altijd het predicaat “Doorluchtige Hoogheid” droeg. Christiaan en Helena woonden eerst in Frogmore House op het landgoed van Windsor Castle en later in Cumberland Lodge in Windsor Great Park. Koningin Victoria stelde prins Christiaan aan als Ridder in de Orde van de Kousenband en als lid van de Privy Council (een adviesraad van de koningin). Christiaan werd in 1877 de persoonlijke adjudant van de koningin. In juli 1866 werd hij generaal-majoor in het Britse leger en hij werd in augustus 1874 gepromoveerd tot luitenant-generaal en in oktober 1877 tot generaal. Vanaf 1869 tot aan zijn dood was Christiaan erekolonel van het eerste vrijwilligersbataljon in het Koninklijke Berkshire Regiment. Prins Christiaan heeft echter nooit tijdens een veldslag aan het hoofd gestaan van troepen. Prins Christiaan stierf in 1917 op 86-jarige leeftijd te Londen. Hij werd begraven op de koninklijke begraafplaats in Windsor Great Park.
