Prime, or the First Hour, is a fixed time of prayer of the traditional Divine Office (Canonical Hours), said at the first hour of daylight, between the morning Hour of Lauds and the 9 a.m. Hour of Terce. It is part of the Christian liturgies of Eastern Christianity, but in the Latin Rite it was de-emphasized by the Second Vatican Council.

It is part of the Christian liturgies of Eastern Christianity, but in the Latin Rite it was de-emphasized by the Second Vatican Council. However, clergy who have an obligation to celebrate the Liturgy of the Hours may still fulfil their obligation by using the Roman Breviary promulgated by Pope John XXIII in 1962, which contains the Hour of Prime. Like all the liturgical hours, except the Office of Readings, it consists primarily of Psalms. It is one of the Little Hours.

Auf dem Zweiten Vatikanischen Konzil wurde die Prim als Doppelung zur Laudes abgeschafft. Nur noch im Stundengebet der Kartäuser ist sie erhalten geblieben.

  • La prima è la preghiera della mattino, ed era una delle ore canoniche ed è recitata circa un'ora dopo l'alba. Essa è basata su tre salmi e una lettura biblica. Nella Chiesa cattolica tale ora è stata soppressa dal Breviario secondo il Rito Romano dal Concilio Vaticano II, che mirava ad adattare la Liturgia delle Ore alla vita moderna. Nel documento Sacrosanctum Concilium al num. 89/d viene dichiarato che "L'ora di Prima sia soppressa". L'invito è stato accolto dai riformatori che nello stendere l'Ufficio divino riformato sia nel rito romano, che in quello ambrosiano, hanno soppresso Prima. I certosini recitano ancora l'Ora di Prima. Nella Chiesa cristiana ortodossa l'ora di Prima è un'ora canonica ancora in uso.
