- Price Look-Up codes, commonly called PLU codes, PLU numbers, PLUs, produce codes or produce labels, are identification numbers affixed to produce and other products in grocery stores and supermarkets to make check-out and inventory control easier, faster, and more accurate. The code is a four or five-digit number, currently in the 3000–4999 range, identifying the type of bulk produce, usually including the variety. Organic produce, grown to the standards of the National Organic Standards Board and the principles of organic farming, is denoted by a five-digit number whose first digit is 9 (e.g. 94011 for organic yellow bananas); an 8 prefix indicates genetically modified food. The codes have been in use since 1990, and there are over 1300 universal PLU codes assigned as of 2008. Use of PLU codes eliminates the need for grocery store checkers to identify each variety of produce visually. This advantage is especially important with the growth of the organic produce market; organic and conventional oranges, for example, may look the same but have very different prices. The system is administered by the International Federation for Produce Standards, an affiliate of the Produce Marketing Association. Price look-up codes are generally printed on small stickers or tags, and are considered inconvenient by some. Various new technologies are under consideration, including etching using lasers and printing or "tattooing" using ink made from substances such as blueberry juice.

Dieser Code bezieht sich hauptsächlich auf Obstsorten, wie zum Beispiel von Äpfel, Birnen, Bananen, usw. Viele Früchte bzw. die Verpackungen haben kleine Aufkleber; zum Beispiel mag darauf „#4021 Golden Delicious“ stehen: Die Nummer ist dabei die dieser Apfelsorte zugeordnete PLU. Auch bei unterschiedlich gestalteten kleinen Aufklebern (die meistens oval sind) sind bei derselben Obstsorte die PLU-Nummern immer gleich, damit man eine Verwechslung ausschließen kann. Gutscheine von Fastfoodrestaurants tragen meist ebenfalls eine mit PLU gekennzeichnete Nummer, anhand derer die Mitarbeiter die Gültigkeit in der jeweiligen Filiale prüfen und den korrekten Preis eingeben können. Die Gastronomie arbeitet mit PLU-Nummern, wobei der Service wahlweise die Nummer eingeben oder den verkauften Artikel (das Wasser) aus einer Datenbank (Artikelstamm) auswählen kann
- PLU je anglická zkratka pro Price Look-Up code. Jedná se identifikační číslo zboží, které začalo být používáno začátkem devadesátých let. Důvod zavedení byla přesnější a rychlejší kontrola skladových zásob. Pomocí PLU se daly snadno rozlišit podobné výrobky s rozdílnou cenou. Například určitý druh ovoce, které bylo dováženo z různých částí světa, se prodávalo ve stejném obchodě. Každý druhy byl za jinou prodejní cenu. Snadno docházelo k záměně. Třeba jablka vypadala na pohled stejně, ale měla jinou prodejní cenu. PLU kódem bylo pomocí etiket zboží označeno a problém s určením zboží tím byl z větší části vyřešen. Velmi zjednodušeně by se PLU kód dal přirovnat k EAN kódu. PLU kód bývá v některých systémech také nazýván "interním kódem zboží" nebo interním ID. Toto názvosloví vzniká v žargonu různých oborů, kde se PLU používá. Označení produktů tímto indetifikačním znakem bývá používáno v různých oblastech prodeje. PLU bývá také náhradou za EAN kód, který stále ještě neexistuje u některých druhů výrobků, např. umělecké předměty, výrobky typu klíčenka, tužka atp. Rozsah PLU je většinou dán potřebami interního systému. V PLU může být například obsaženo číslo kategorie a pořadové číslo výrobku v této kategorii nebo může být PLU generováno náhodně. Obecně se PLU kódy tisknou na etikety spolu s dalšími informacemi o zboží(výrobku). Zboží je zpravidla označeno názvem, jednotkovou cenou, EAN kódem a případně tímto PLU kódem. Využití PLU v současnosti (rok 2009) je především jako další identifikace výrobku v informačních systémech, při prodeji nebo ke skladovým účelům a inventurám. Příklady z praxe: Pokud při reálném prodeji nastane situace, že není možno načíst EAN kód nebo číslo EAN kódu nelze do pokladního systému zadat. Inventurní seznam s PLU kódy.
